Doing a search on Google Image search is a great way to find a lot of interesting pictures, but it used to be very time consuming to find what pictures you could use legally on your site. Thankfully Google now has an option to search images by usage rights. As seen below, under the Search tools (1.) and then Usage Rights (2.) are options to filter the search by pictures labeled for reuse, labeled for commercial reuse, labeled for reuse with modification, and labeled for commercial reuse with modification.

If you think that Google is just another simple search engine, think again. There are numerous tricks that are waiting just around the corner. Just leap into the wonderful world of possibilities in Google.

    When you first go to 'Google.com', you don't see much. It looks like a very simple search engine. In actuality it is but it can be used for much more. Over to the right of the search box, there are three links: Advanced Search, Preferences, and Language Search.
        Advanced Search - If you press Advanced Search, a page comes up with many different options.
        In the box labeled "All these words" is your standard search box like the one on the front page.
        The box "this exact wording or phrase" doesn't contain words in the middle of a sentence. It will surround the words with quotes "". For example, if you type in "wikiHow is Awesome" in the this exact wording or phrase box, the search won't include a page with "Is wikiHow useful? Many people asked do think it is useful and awesome" but will include "wikiHow is Awesome. This is why I think so."

    The "one or more of these words" box let's you look up something or something else instead but it won't find the two search terms together. For instance, you could search with the box "Chicken OR Gravy" the search would include pages about chicken and others about gravy.

    The next box is the "unwanted words" box. This box lets you not include certain words in your search. This box puts a - before the word. For example, if you search for "Bass" as in the fish, you could type in "Bass -Sing" to find pages that have Bass in them and not about singing.

    Below the boxes, you can choose how many results you want in your search in the drop down box "Results per Page"
        "Language" which lets you choose which language you want the search results to be. This option isn't very necessary. If you search a English word, then you will probably get English.

        "File Type" let's you select which kind of file you want the search result to be. So if you want to find .pdf files then you would select Adobe Acrobat PDF.

        "Search within a site or domain" lets you search inside a certain website or a extension like ".edu"

    You don't need the advanced page to advance search. Just use the "" to search with exact wording. OR for one or more of these words. - to exclude a word
    If you want to use experimental search ideas go to the top right corner of the page, then click more, click even more for a list of Google products. Click "Labs" for beta products. Click the "Experimental Search" link. Mess around with the experimental searches as much as you want. You can even search and see results on maps or timelines.

Using Google’s Advanced Image Search

Google makes it so easy to find and use a wide assortment of images that we often forget

about copyright when using the images we find there. Here's the thing... most of the images

you find there are probably covered by some sort of copyright. This means you might require

owner permission before you can use the image. I've

read articles

that suggest you assume

ALL images there are copyrighted. In some cases, abiding by this rule of thumb can save you

from

getting sued

by an angry copyright holder.

Google Images Advanced Search is a powerful alternative for finding free images in the public domain on Flickr, Morguefile and Stock.xchng.

One of the hardest things about blogging is finding unique images that are both good quality and relevant to the topic you’re writing about. The other problem is navigating the labyrinthine rules of US copyright law to determine if it’s safe to use a particular image on your site.

Or maybe you don’t have a blog but just need an image for a report or presentation. Most people head over to Google’s homepage, click on Images, type the name of an image they want and download the first or second result but it’s important to note that grabbing copyright images does have ramifications. When in doubt the US copyright office advises that you obtain explicit permission from the image owners.
Well fortunately there’s an easy way to retrieve royalty free images.
Just use Google’s Advanced Image Search tool.
Visit Google.com and click on Images in the gray bar that rides along the top edge of the browser.
Then, in the top far right corner of the browser, click the little gear icon and choose Advanced Search

The Advanced Image Search form appears. Scroll to the bottom and under Usage Rights, choose free to use or share, even commercially.

Now Google only displays royalty free images in the search results.

And if you want to be extra certain that you won’t have any litigious image creators seeking to sue you, drag and drop your image into TinEye to conduct a reverse image search and confirm that it is indeed free. TinEye is a free tool that attempts “to connect images to their authors and facilitate attribution”. There are over 2 billion pages in its database and so it’s a pretty good site to check your images before you use them.

In my example, you can see I’ve found 7 results for my Beet image and that it does indeed have a creative commons license.

Multi Image Downloader is a tool that uses the Google Images search engine to locate and download pictures without having to search through multiple sites to get at the original images.

This nifty little freeware program is highly effective and quickly downloads a large number of images from Google Image Search Results to any folder on your computer.
How to Use Multi Image Downloader:
Once you have downloaded and installed it, fire it up. Next Step is to Open the Google Image Search page in your browser (http://images.google.com) and search for anything you like. For e.g.. above I have searched for “Guitar Wallpapers”.

Once your search is done click on “Get URL” button and the Search URL would get copied in the program. Click on the “Get Image Links” button to make sure if it is able to get to the image links. If it lists the image links – all is working well.

In the screenshot below we see it lists the Original Image links from various sources – right from the search results.

Click on “download” button to start downloading the original size images. Make sure you specify the destination folder before downloading.

Due to changes to Google Search, sometimes the program may not work properly. A workaround is to go to the 2nd search page and manually copy the search URL in the Google Image Page URL box. It works every time. It also helps if you use your default browser on your computer – however it works for all browser from Internet Explorer to Firefox and Google Chrome.

Google Imag is a search service owned by Google and introduced in July 2001, that allows users to search the Web for imag content.[1] The keywords for the imag search are based on the filename of the image, the link text pointing to the imag, and text adjacent to the imag. When searching for an imag, a thumbnail of each matching imag is displayed. When the user clicks on a thumbnail, the image is displayed in a box over the website that it came from. The user can then close the box and browse the website, or view the full-sized imag.In 2001, 250 million images were indexed. In 2005, this grew to 1 billion. By 2010, the index reached 10 billion images.[2] As of July 2010, the service receives over one billion views a day.[3] Google introduced a sort by subject feature for a visual category scheme overview of a search query in May 2011.[4]In early 2007 Google implemented an updated user interface for the image search, where information about the image, such as resolution and URL, was hidden until the user moved the mouse over the thumbnail.[5] This was discontinued after a few weeks.

On October 27, 2009, Google Images added a feature to its imag search that can be used to find similar imags.[6][7]

On July 20, 2010, Google updated the user interface again, hiding imag details until mouse over, like before.[8] This feature can be disabled by pressing "Ctrl + End" on one's keyboard and clicking "Switch to basic version".

In June 2011, Google Images began to allow for reverse image searches directly in the image search-bar (that is, without a third-party add on, such as the one previously available for Mozilla Firefox). This feature allows users to search by dragging and dropping an image into the search-bar, uploading an image, selecting a URL, or 'right-clicking' on an image.

On December 11, 2012, Google Images' search engine algorithm was changed once again, in the hopes of preventing pornographic images from appearing when non-pornographic search terms are used.[10][11][12] According to Google, pornographic images would still appear as long as the term searched for was specifically pornographic. While explicitly stating that they were "not censoring any adult content", it was immediately noted that even when entering terms such as "blow job",[12][13] "boob,"[12] or even the word "pornography" itself, no explicit results were shown. The only alternative option is to turn on an even stricter filter which will refuse to search for the aforementioned terms whatsoever. It has also been noted that users can no longer exclude keywords from their search as before.[14]

Image collection exploration is a mechanism to explore large digital image repositories. The huge amount of digital images produced every day through different devices such as mobile phones bring forth challenges for the storage, indexing and access to these repositories. Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) has been the traditional paradigm to index and retrieve images. However, this paradigm suffers of the well known semantic gap problem. Image collection exploration consists of a set of computational methods to represent, summarize, visualize and navigate image repositories in an efficient, effective and intuitive way.[1]

Automatic summarization consists in finding a set of images from a larger image collection that represents such collection.[2] Different methods based on clustering have been proposed to select these image prototypes (summary). The summarization process addresses the problem of selecting a representative set of images of a search query or in some cases, the overview of an image collection.[3]
Image collection visualization is the process of visualize a set of images using a visualization metaphor, in which an image similarity function is used to represent image relations in a visualization layout.[4] Information visualization is an active area that investigates new ways to visualize information by using visualization metaphors. Particularly, new ways of visualizing image collections are being investigated, which propose conventional [5] and unconventional [6] visualization metaphors.Image collection interaction consists in offering users mechanisms to feedback image search systems.[7] In this interaction process, the system learns from user feedback to retrieve results more precise and relevant to the user.
